VT NUQRH

Virginia Tech – New Upper Quad Residence Hall

This project’s site is at the southeast corner of Stanger Street and Old Turner Street where an existing facility, Femoyer Hall, is currently located. Femoyer Hall is an approximately 35,000 sf facility constructed in 1949 and originally designed as a residence hall; it will be demolished as part of this project. Given the constraints of the existing site, the building footprint and orientation of NUQRH will be two wings, the North wing running East to West, and the West Wing running North to South. The project shall provide a strategy for the site and landscape design that allows for fire truck access, locates dumpsters for cadet use, and includes bike racks, ADA parking considerations, and a review of pedestrian-vehicular site lines. Significant grade challenges exist at the west side of the site between the building and Stanger Street, this project shall provide an accessible route to the Upper Quad from the intersection of Stanger and Old Turner streets.

Key Project Goals and Conditions:

    • 301 beds for Corps of Cadets Administrative space and front-of-house operation
    • Service loading area
    • Collegiate Gothic exterior clad, Hokie Stone
    • Precast concrete panels and trim
    • Combination of curtain wall glazing and punched opening windows
    • Site accessibility to Upper Quad from Stanger/Old Turner intersection
    • Surrounded by existing facilities to the south and east (CLMS project)
    • Directly adjacent to the roadway with significant central campus infrastructure
    • Demolition of an existing four-story structure
    • Relocation of underground utilities
Wiley Middle School

Wiley Middle School Renovations

Scope of work included demolishing the existing gymnasium and constructing a new 24,301 sf, two-story addition with administrative space, gymnasium, entrance lobby, restrooms and storage on the top level, and four (4) new classrooms, lockers and more storage in the lower level. The existing gymnasium housed the boiler that serves the entire school campus. A new boiler was installed in an existing mechanical room in the main school building, requiring a new cast in place concrete elevated slab, new 2-hour rated enclosure, and new exterior entrance. Also included in the scope was the renovation of 2,881 sf of administrative office space that became three (3) new classrooms and the conversion of one (1) existing classroom into a new entrance thoroughfare that will connect the new addition to the existing main level corridor. This addition gives the school a new entrance, a new gymnasium, four (4) new administrative offices and six (6) new classrooms. This project was very challenging due to the tight site, logistics in and out of the construction area adjacent to the existing school, and demanding schedule.

Demolition of the existing Arts, Learning & Design Center and the construction of a new 65,428 sf, 3-story, steel framed structure supported on deep foundation micropiles, constructed to span over an existing 8,449 sf fully functioning Water Treatment Plant. The new building will provide offices, conference rooms, meeting rooms, and classrooms for the Corps of Cadets. It will also house a museum for the Corps, along with a 3 story atrium and an executive honor court. Exterior skin consists of architectural precast concrete, Hokie stone and aluminum punched windows. The project also involves extensive sitework, including the relocation of existing water, sanitary, sewer, storm, communications and electrical.
