Belk House

Belk House

The Belk House, a significant historical landmark in Charlotte, was remodeled to serve as a medical office building for Novant Health, formerly Presbyterian Hospital. Built in 1924 by William Henry Belk, this two-story, 16-room mansion is a stunning example of Colonial Revival/Classical Revival architecture. The Belk family raised their six children and held social gatherings there.  The design features a colonial revival neoclassical style with double ascending staircase, large entry vestibule, and floor-to-ceiling windows. William Henry Belk passed away in 1952 but his wife continued to live there until her death in 1968. Mary Belk donated the house to Presbyterian Hospital in her will and the building is now used for offices and receptions.  Vannoy Construction was tasked with renovating  the house for use by Presbyterian Hospital, while staying true to its original architecture and grandeur.

Presby Main

Presbyterian Main Dialysis Center

The Novant Dialysis Center at Presbyterian Main Hospital in Charlotte consisted of renovating a dated area of the hospital into a new, state-of-the-art Dialysis Center located on the 4th floor of an existing tower. The Dialysis Center features room for 14 beds, including two single bed areas, an IT/server room, restrooms, staff/administration area, chemical/treatment holding tank area, storage, and city views.

The project was located above high-tech lab equipment and space, and adjacent to two OR and ICU spaces. Due to logistical challenges, including a seven-floor med-gas and oxygen shut down while tying into the new lines on the Dialysis Center, our team maintained constant contact with the Hospital staff and took extreme caution to ensure the shut-down were completed properly.

In order to complete the project, a temporary construction entrance was constructed to allow for minimal disruption to ongoing operations for the hospital. All deliveries were scheduled during times that allowed for patient rest, as well as to keep a quiet environment. Extensive coordination was conducted with the lab space below to abide by “quiet times” for lab operation and research.

GE Aviation

GE Aviation Manufacturing Facility

Our team has been performing regular construction management services for GE Aviation, beginning with the initial construction of the manufacturing facility. The 112,000 sf facility was initially designed and constructed for the Oldham Company, who manufactured drill bits, router bits and other small tools. The facility was bought by Smith Aerospace and later acquired by GE Aviation for manufacturing rotating parts for jet engine turbines. The facility, with its 30’-0” clear structure and 8” concrete floors, was a perfect fit for the heavy industrial application that was required by the turbine manufacturing process.

In 2012, GE again came to Vannoy to expand and renovate the existing facility. The scope of work included the following projects:

  1. Cooling Tower: Addition of a pre-engineered metal building erected around and over the existing cooling tower, while maintaining full operation and function. The sprinkled shell warehouse space was intended to protect the cooling tower from the mountain region weather.
  2. Facilities Storage: 2,500 sf masonry wall with metal bar joist and TPO roof addition to the chemical storage area of the plant. The storage room houses by-product of machining processes such as cutting oils and hydraulic fluids. The addition contains full HVAC, electrical, lighting, sprinkler, and fire alarm systems, along with connection of the existing swipe card security system.
  3. Office Improvements: The remaining balance of the project budget was used for general repair and improvements to the office infrastructure. Our team renovated existing EIFIS façade, windows, and sidewalks around the administrative wing of the plant, as well as replaced floor covering and refinished several offices.
Sentara Thumb

Sentara Data Center

In an effort to consolidate IT workforce under one roof, Sentara Healthcare selected Vannoy Construction to perform demolition and construction services in a former hospital converted to a robust outpatient campus and IT office space. The work was conducted adjacent to a free-standing 24-hour emergency department. The project includes complete interior demolition to remove 100% of abandoned electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems, and build-back of approximately 24,000 sf, including 8,776 sf of Data Center space. The Data Center consists of two, 2MW generators with supporting diesel fuel tanks, three air-cooled chillers feeding 10 CRAC units, and approximately 14,000 sf of raised access flooring.
