WCU Health and Gerontology Building

This state-of-the-art facility is the first building on the new Western Carolina University – Millennium Campus located adjacent to the existing university. This facility contains all Health and Human Science curriculum studies offered by WCU. The 160,000 sf facility features a four-floor layout which contains well-equipped laboratories, offices for many department heads and staff, along with a separate dean’s suite. The location of office and administrative areas allow the faculty and staff to maintain a close connection to the student’s needs. The first floor includes a clinic where local residents can receive medical assistance. The clinic includes a hydrotherapy pool for patients to regain strength and agility to continue their active lives. The building achieved LEED Gold certification.



Watauga High School

Watauga High School

This project included a new, three-story 302,000 sf high school situated on 92 acres. Design features included a radius roof dominant massing element, curtain walls and a central commons area. The high school is designed as “Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR” and is LEED silver registered and will achieve 38% in energy reduction in comparison to their previous facility. LEED/ sustainable materials and methods employed consist of water harvesting cisterns, gray water domestic plumbing, solar tubes and daylighting, waste management, light fixture control, no VOC emitting materials as well as a geo-thermal HVAC system powering the entire facility. Along with the main structure, the project included a football stadium, soccer stadium, field house and concession areas as well as tennis courts, baseball and softball fields and outbuildings. This project was a joint venture.

Southwest Community College

SCC Administrative Building

Completed by Vannoy Construction in 2012, the 38,000 sf, three-story glass curtain wall and brick veneer building features two glass atriums and a 3rd floor pedestrian bridge which connects to the main campus. The facility has 48 geothermal wells, which supply the HVAC system and reduce the total lifecycle cost of the building. This new building includes a bookstore, classrooms, and office suites, and has become a flagship landmark for Southwestern Community College.

ASU Dining Hall

ASU Dining Hall

The new 95,000-square-foot, two-story campus dining hall was constructed in the center of campus on a tight site that posed many logistical challenges. The building features a large open dining area with both small and group dining meeting rooms with a state-of-the-art kitchen.  The project included high-end interior finishes, commercial food service kitchen equipment and extensive site development. The dining hall contains storage space and staffing offices for food services department, new steam vault spanning the width of the new structure, and new rotunda. Also included in the new dining hall are gathering spaces, private meeting rooms, and multiple areas for food service vendors in the open concept kitchen.  This project is located in the mountains of North Carolina and was designed for the mountainous terrain. Also included was extensive landscaping, hardscapes and asphalt paving.

 

The exterior of the building is cast in place concrete foundation and retaining walls, structural steel frame, cmu masonry infill, brick and native stone veneer, architectural aluminum storefront, curtain wall and stain glass elements. The interior finishes are cmu drywall construction, suspended acoustical ceilings, linear metal ceilings and exposed structure. The flooring consists of stone tile,ceramic tile, VCT and carpet. Also included in the interiors are architectural casework, food service equipment, elevators, demountable partitions, sound and data systems and loading dock equipment.
