The urban site is surrounded by busy NCDOT roadways on three sides of the property, which are used daily for traffic commuting into and out of the downtown area. On the east side of the site is an existing nine-story medical tower and an eight-story parking deck that are occupied daily. Our project consisted of building a brand new eight-story cancer center with a separate eight-story parking deck, both of which take up nearly 80% of the site footprint. We were also tasked with building a new pedestrian bridge connecting the existing medical tower with the new cancer center over an occupied road and entrance drive. Lastly, two of the three NCDOT roads had to be widened, along with reworking two busy intersections for traffic flow as directed by the city. The logistical challenges the team faced were extremely complex. We came up with solutions to maintain traffic flow, keep pedestrian sidewalks open, maintain existing medical tower facility operations, and build a connector bridge over a road that had to stay open. All of this while having minimal laydown space for equipment and materials to build the new buildings.
